New site mephitis.co dedicated to supporting victims of institutional and corporate misconduct has been launched
I launched chimpinvestor.com during lockdown as an archive of my hundreds of investment articles published over the previous couple of decades or so and as a platform to write more investment articles. My approach to investing was and is very statistically driven and it was this interest in statistics that took me into the justice system, so-called cluster cases, and miscarriages.
Cluster cases are ones where there is a big increase (or decrease) in the number of events of something and thus ones that lend themselves to statistical analysis. Many of them relate to healthcare (deaths within a family, among a doctor's patients, on a hospital ward) but they can also occur elsewhere (the Post Office scandal is a cluster case in that there was a big and sudden increase in the number of subpostmasters being accused of fraud). I also, like many, have an abhorrence of injustice.
So, I started writing about the statistics and the justice system on chimpinvestor.com back in 2021 (https://www.chimpinvestor.com/post/vital-statistics).
I heard about Lucy Letby when her trial started in October 2022. I was immediately appalled. It seemed obvious the hospital failings set out in the RCPCH service review (https://pdf4pro.com/cdn/www-coch-nhs-uk-7537c.pdf) were to blame for the increased mortality in 2015 and 2016. Not a serial killer. And certainly not Lucy. Moreover, Lucy was charged with only 7 of the 17 deaths during the period in question. What about the other ten? Why wasn't Cheshire Police investigating those?
It stank.
So, I wrote about the case on chimpinvestor.com when the trial started and kept writing about it.
I have however always been uncomfortable using chimpinvestor.com to write about Lucy Letby given that the site was supposed to be about investing. To those who just wanted to read about investing, I apologise.
That said, an exciting opportunity has arisen to collaborate with a new blog, mephitis.co, a site that is dedicated to supporting victims of institutional and corporate misconduct. My 30 or so blogs about Lucy and miscarriages generally posted on chimpinvestor.com over the last three or so years will be moved to mephitis.co and I will continue to write articles about her case, and others, over there. I will be one of a number of authors posting articles on the new website.
I know that many chimpinvestor.com members and contacts have been very active in the comments sections of blogs and the forum. Articles together with comments have been moved to the new site. The forum has been split into Investing and The Justice System. Members wishing to continue discussing Lucy Letby and the justice system can use the latter.
Mephitis was the Roman goddess of swamp gasses. It is the name for stinky things that emanate from the earth such as sulphur dioxide. It is the taxonomic name for skunks. Mephitis.co is about things that stink. It is about institutional and corporate misconduct.
